Keeping events safe in a post-COVID landscape.

"The prospect of being able to leverage our existing IOT networks with now proven environmental sensors throughout Tasmania and the rest of the country... gives us the ability to share critical public health information in real time with our customers and their partners.”

-Robert Vernon, CEO, TasmaNet

The Taste of Summer event is held in Hobart's waterfront precinct over the Christmas / New Year period, with the iconic Syndey to Hobart Yacht Race finishing alongside the event, providing an incredible backdrop for patrons.

TasmaNet worked closely with the organisers to ensure the world-class event ran smoothly. The building had new wireless network routers installed by the TasmaNet Delivery Team, and a Business Internet Connection enabled all stallholders to reliably run their POS systems during peak trading hours. Firewall also kept all user data safe.

TasmaNet and Indicium Dynamics also partnered to successfully install and monitor CO2 and environmental sensors throughout the building.

These sensors were enabled by TasmaNet’s Internet of Things (IOT) network and provided real-time monitoring of CO2 levels throughout the Taste of Summer event site at Princes Wharf in Hobart. This allowed event organisers to track population density, CO2 levels and other environmental metrics within the event spaces.

Tasmania's borders re-opened to travelers just days before the launch of the Taste of Summer, which resulted in COVID-19 cases circulating in the Tasmanian community again. This introduced a new set of challenges for the organisers as health and safety regulations swiftly changed.

Poor ventilation and low air quality indoors can increase the risk of disease transmission, which would mean a higher risk of patrons contracting COVID-19 at the Taste of Summer should positive cases attend. The monitoring of CO2 levels at the event space enabled organisers to identify the best sources of adequate ventilation and where improvements can be made for future events to account for community safety and COVID 19 requirements.

Taste of Summer Co-Founder Tom McDevitt said “TasmaNet approached us with the solution which gave us the ability to make real time decisions about air quality and patron density, giving us a fantastic tool to be able to ensure that we provided the safest event possible for our staff, visitors and stallholders. The solution will be very useful in planning for future events in our public spaces”.

TasmaNet CEO Rob Vernon says “We’re very excited by the lessons we’ve learned from this project. The prospect of being able to leverage our existing IOT networks with now proven environmental sensors throughout Tasmania and the rest of the country has been accelerated through our partnership with Indicium Dynamics and has extended TasmaNet’s capability to capture, visualise and intelligently make decisions based on the raw data. This gives us the ability to share critical public health information in real time with our customers and their partners.”
